While most downstate districts remained nearly the same, much of Jackson Heights would now be in the overwhelmingly Democratic 14th District with U.S. Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortzez (D-Astoria, Castle Hill, Parkchester) and newly-sworn U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove, North Hempstead, Bayside) saw the 3rd Congressional District become slightly more Democratic, gaining Huntington Village while The Massapequas moved to the much more Republican-friendly 2nd District of U.S. Rep. Andrew Garbarino (R-Babylon, Islip, Patchogue). Former State Sen. Jim Gaughran (D-Northport) and former Congressional aide Kyle Hill (D-Port Jefferson) both ended Congressional bids for the 1st District against U.S. Rep. Nick LaLota (R-Commack, Port Jefferson, Riverhead) after that district became more Republican.
While the 4th Congressional District did not change its boundaries, political speculation continues that State Senator Kevin Thomas (D-Hempstead, Freeport, Rockville Centre) will soon drop out of the Democratic primary to take on U.S. Rep. Anthony D’Esposito (R-Town of Hempstead, Long Beach). This would likely clear the way for D’Esposito’s nationally-watched rematch with former Hempstead Town Supervisor Laura Gillen. While D’Esposito defeated Gillen 52-48% in 2022, President Joe Biden easily carried the district with 57% of the vote in 2020.
