Long Island Board of REALTORS® Aid in Community Gazebo Rebuild

Long Island Board of REALTORS® (LIBOR) recently made a contribution to aid in the reconstruction of the Seaford Memorial Gazebo in Washington Avenue Park, which was destroyed last summer during Tropical Storm Isaias.

LIBOR worked with the Nassau County Executive's office and the Parks Department to help fund and complete this worthy project.

The gazebo, a local landmark in the Seaford community, was dedicated to John Capano a senior special agent with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, who was killed in a friendly fire incident while attempting to stop a robbery at a Seaford pharmacy on December 31, 2011.

The building and dedication of the original gazebo and garden, was part of a 2014 Eagle Scout project by Cory Levy of Seaford, who wanted to create a memorial to honor Capano.

On August 6, 2021, LIBOR’s Senior Director of Public Policy and Government Affairs Marlo Paventi Dilts joined Nassau County Executive Laura Curran, Nassau County Legislators Rose Marie Walker and Steve Rhoads, who were instrumental in the restoration, and the family of John Capano for the re-dedication ceremony for the newly restored gazebo.

“Long Island Board of REALTORS® is honored to be a part of rebuilding the Seaford Memorial Gazebo, to ensure that slain federal agent John Capano's sacrifice is not forgotten, and to restore the efforts and hard work by Eagle Scout Cory Levy,” said LIBOR President Susan Helsinger. “As REALTORS®, it is our livelihood to support and assist in making our communities a better place to live, work and play.”
